Coming off of a rough Grapefruit League outing Monday, the Tigers' No. 1 prospect will cease his throwing program for one week due to soreness in his shoulder.

"The other day in his outing, he had trouble getting loose and trouble finishing off his pitches," Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand told MLB.com's Jason Beck. "So we're basically shutting him down at this point in time to deal with a little bit of a tendinitis issue in his shoulder. We're working on treatment, range of motion and strength until we feel comfortable putting him back out there."

Turner, the ninth overall draftee in 2009, went 4-5 with a 3.44 ERA in 20 Minor League starts with Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo last season before finishing with the Tigers. In his first three Major League starts, the 20-year-old right-hander went 0-1 with an 8.53 ERA.

MLB.com's No. 15 prospect had allowed six runs on six hits and six walks over his first three Spring Training outings, which spanned four innings.

Turner remains in a widely-contested battle with fellow prospects Andy Oliver and Drew Smyly as well as Duane Below and Adam Wilk to join Justin Verlander, Doug Fister, Max Scherzer and Rick Porcello in Detroit's five-man rotation.

"I would say it lessens his chances of being the fifth starter," Tigers skipper Jim Leyland told Beck. "Does it take him out? No."
