Late excitement in Texas ends with Surge win

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - The Wind Surge and the Hooks both had only one run heading into the ninth inning. The tie ballgame was decided by Willie Joe Garry Jr. in the top of the ninth when he took advantage of a throwing and error and displayed excellent base running skills by reaching home. The Wichita Wind Surge defeated the Corpus Christi Hooks by a score of 2-1. The Hooks now lead the series two games to one.

Wichita jumped out in front in the top of the second inning. Seth Gray hit a solo home run on a fly ball to right field.

The lead did not last long. Corpus Christi also got a home run in the second inning. Chad Stevens tied the game up in the bottom of the inning when he hit a solo home run on a line drive to left field.

Garry Jr. broke the tie in the top of the ninth off some skillful base running. The Hooks catcher made an error attempting to throw out Garry Jr. stealing second and Garry Jr. took advantage of the situation and took off towards home. He beat the throw home and the Wind Surge took a late lead.

Pierson Ohl made his 13th start of the season for the Wind Surge. He pitched five and one third innings where he gave up one run off four hits. He struck out four batters and walked one. Curtis Taylor earned the win, and his record improves to (2-5).

The Corpus Christi Hooks starting pitcher A.J. Blubaugh pitched three and one third innings where he gave up one run off two hits. He struck out four batters and walked two more. Julio Robaina was credited with the loss, and his record falls to (8-6).

The first place Wichita Wind Surge improve to (33-27, 61-67) and the Corpus Christi Hooks fall to (31-29, 64-65).

NOTES: Yoyner Fajardo extended his reached base streak to 22 consecutive games. The streak is the longest of any Wind Surge player this season. Curtis Taylor has not allowed a run in nine and one third innings.

UPCOMING: The Wind Surge continue their final road series of the season down south in Corpus Christi. Game four of the six game series against the Hooks will be played Friday, September 8th and first pitch will be at 7:05 PM. RH Marco Raya will take the mound for Wichita and RH Ryan Gusto will be the starting pitcher for Corpus Christi.

NEXT HOME GAME: The Wind Surge head back home to Riverfront Stadium on Tuesday, September 12th to play game one of their final home series this season. They will take on the Midland RockHounds and first pitch will be at 7:05 PM.
